Memphis – A slow start for Rhodes College women's basketball resulted in a loss to Berry inside Mallory Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Lynx fell 81-70 after starting the game with a 15-6 deficit. Rhodes is now 11-7 on the year and 4-3 in conference.
Rhodes trailed 18-9 after the first period, making just three of 11 field goal attempts, but held an 18-17 advantage in the ensuing 10 minutes. Berry led 35-27 at halftime.
Rhodes came out of the break and shot 60% in the field overall during the third frame, however Berry sank four of seven three-point attempts as each team netted 21 points in the period. Berry led 56-48 headed into the fourth period.
Rhodes' offense came alive behind the arc as the Lynx scored three treys in a row to open the final period. The last three-pointer, which
Alli Mayeux scored from well beyond the arc, gave Rhodes a very brief lead (57-56) before Berry secured seven unanswered points to regain the lead for the remainder of the game.
For Rhodes,
Allie Young scored 18 points, 17 of which came in the second and third periods.
Kiera Downey added 15 going six-of-nine including missing just one of four trey attempts.
Alyssa Owens and Mayeux both tallied 11 points while Owens added seven assists. Mayeux and Young led the Lynx with seven rebounds each.
In the game, Rhodes shot 38.7% from the arc, connecting on 12 of 31 attempts while Berry shot 47.8% from long range and made 11 of 23 attempts. Berry held a 37-27 rebounding advantage during the contest.
From Berry, Mary Walkters led all scorers with 23 points.
Rhodes will travel to Oglethorpe and Berry next weekend before they return to Mallory for Senior Day during the men's halftime on Friday, February 1.
