Memphis - Rhodes College men's basketball ended a four-game losing streak as the Lynx started the game with an 18-7 lead over the Millsaps College Majors Sunday afternoon. Rhodes took a 40-25 halftime lead before defeating the Majors by 20 points to earn their first conference victory of the year.
Rhodes limited themselves to 10 turnovers in the game and out-shot Millsaps in each category to take home the win. The Lynx held a 18-point lead after
Mac James connected on a jumper inside the paint with 10:13 to go. The Majors threatened Rhodes' scoring drives by cutting their lead to 10 after a dunk from Justin Van Pelt. An 8-2 run which included back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore
Tyler Guest gave Rhodes some more breathing room. With Rhodes leading 72-60,
Preston Giroux scored seven straight points to give Rhodes a 19-point advantage with two minutes to play.
Taddeus Dixon sank both his free throws with 15 seconds left to give Rhodes their largest lead of the game.
Guest and Giroux both tallied the game-high 17 points.
Jake Nestlehutt scored 10 points as he and Guest each went three-of-five from long range. Guest picked up five rebounds while Nestlehutt added four. Giroux's consistent accuracy inside the paint (8-of-11), helped the Lynx maintain a 52.5% accuracy in the field. The Lynx converted 10 of their 22 three-point attempts and finished the game 9-of-13 from the free throw line.
Millsaps shot 36.8% from the field and made only seven of their 23 attempts from behind the arc. The Majors out-rebounded the Lynx 39-31, but committed 17 turnovers.
Rhodes, who is now 4-12 on the year, will host Oglethorpe at home on Friday, January 18 at 6 p.m., followed by Berry College on Sunday the 20th at 3 p.m.
