Memphis - Rhodes College women's soccer defeated Belhaven University 5-0 Tuesday afternoon under the hot sun. The Lynx are now 1-1 on the season while the Blazers drop to 0-2-1.
A slow start to the game saw only one goal for Rhodes in the first half, despite the Lynx maintaining most of the possessions. Senior
Aly Hoyt netted the game-winner in the 31st minute after receiving the ball from
Sara Scherer.
In the second half, Rhodes more than doubled their offensive chances, tallying 15 shots compared to seven in the first half. Hoyt added an insurance goal 11 minutes in the half after
Liz Vega served her from the right side. Five minutes later Rachal Giampapa set up
Sydnie Schindler to give Rhodes a 4-0 lead. In the 80th minute, freshman
Alli Cundiff found a wide open Isabel Rodriquez and just three and a half minutes later, a soft touch by
Maddy Peticolas found Cundiff at the top of the box for the final goal of the game.
That's five different assists for the Lynx as well as first career goals for Cundiff and Rodriguez as well as the first career assist for Peticolas.
Rhodes is at home again this weekend, hosting LeTourneau on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by East Texas Baptist on Sunday at 1 p.m.
