Memphis - Twenty-five minutes into the Rhodes women's soccer match Friday afternoon, a light rain began to fall as the Lynx squared off against LeTourneau University. Almost six minutes later, and steadier rain falling, senior
Sydnie Schindler launched the ball from the top center of the box directly under the crossbar to give Rhodes a 1-0 lead.
Both teams found themselves in the pouring rain trying to play soccer for about eight minutes before it tapered off for a sunny halftime break. Ten minutes into the second half, another front came through bringing more rain, making it difficult for both teams to gain footing on the ground. The rain eventually cleared for the final 20 minutes of regulation.
LeTourneau tied the game in the 65th minute after the ball was sent in from the near sideline to the top of the box and footed in past a sliding Rhodes goalkeeper.
During the first overtime, the Lynx held a 4-1 shot advantage over the YellowJackets, including several right in front of the goal. By the final whistle, both teams had tallied 14 shots in a physical matchup where LeTourneau recorded 14 fouls while the Lynx tallied seven.
In goal,
Meghan Kiker recorded seven saves for the Lynx including three in overtime.
Rhodes will look ahead to their home contest on Sunday at 1 p.m. against East Texas Baptist University.
