Memphis - Rhodes College field hockey succumbed to Centre College Sunday 3-1. The loss is the first of the season for Rhodes who is now 6-1. The Colonels improve to 5-2 on the year.
Centre received a penalty corner five minutes into the contest and after securing the ball and dribbling around the Lynx and into the circle, Caroline Brotzge sent the ball to the back of the boards along the left side to net the first goal of the game. The Lynx tied the game 10 minutes later after a Centre foul gave Rhodes the ball on their offensive end. Senior
Jillian Christensen scooted the ball inside the circle where freshman
Hannah Luckes reverse flicked it around a Centre defender, finding junior
Hailey Mules who tipped in the ball past a sliding Colonel goalkeeper. A couple of minutes before the end of the first half, Centre was making a break-away before Rhodes goalie
Nina Migneco made a sliding save to eliminate the threat. She would go on to make a career-high nine saves in the game, including five in the first half.
Centre recorded eight shots in the second half, compared to Rhodes' three. Migneco made a great save in the 40th minute before Centre regained control of the ball a minute later to score the game-winner on a reverse sweep. Centre added an insurance goal with 5:08 to play from the center of the circle.
The game was nothing short of a heated battle as Rhodes was served two yellow cards and a green card.
The Lynx will take to the road for the next two weeks, first traveling to Sewanee Saturday, followed by a neutral-site game against Concordia Univ. Wisconsin just west of St. Louis on Sunday, October 7th.
