Memphis - Rhodes College volleyball has now won four of their last five matches after sweeping Oglethorpe University and coming out on top of a five-set thriller against LeTourneau Saturday afternoon. The wins improve the Lynx to 10-5 on the year and a 3-3 conference record.
Oglethorpe
Rhodes took a 13-8 lead to force Oglethorpe to opt for a timeout.
Morgan Hill responded with a sliding kill to the right side to give the Lynx an additional advantage. The Stormy Petrels pulled within one before the Lynx took a 20-16 lead. Tied 22-all, a block by
Emily Korba and Hill, followed by an ace from freshman
Marissa Hall put Rhodes at set-point. A service error and tip by Oglethorpe tied the game at 24. The Lynx called a timeout and earned the extra-point win after a kill by Hill and an attack error from the Petrels.
Tied 7-7 in the second set, a kill from
Heather Antrim sparked a Lynx four-point run. Rhodes led 21-17 and scored three straight points. Rhodes earned the second set victory on a service error by the visitors. The Lynx led 10-4 in the third set looking for the sweep. Oglethorpe was able to pull within one (17-16) but the Lynx re-opened the game with three unanswered points, which concluded on an Antrim kill after a long rally. The Lynx took the game on yet another service error by Oglethorpe.
In the game, Korba led Rhodes with 11 kills, followed by Glasper with 10 and
Camila Zimmerman with seven. Hill finished the game with three blocks, followed by Kalman and Korba with two each. Hall led the Lynx with 20 assists and recorded 10 digs while Glasper and Zimmerman both recorded 12 digs.
LeTourneau
A solo block from Zimmerman gave the Lynx a 25-19 victory to start their second game of the day. Rhodes struggled during the second set and fell 25-16 before bouncing back to take a 17-12 lead in the third set. The Lynx reached 20 points when setter
Annie Burke dug out a YellowJacket attack and fell to the ground on a slam by
Kelsey Glasper who put the dig over the net. The Lynx went up 2-1 after a 5-1 run to start the fourth frame. The Lynx trailed 5-9 before earning four straight points to tie the game which included a solo block by freshman
Drew Kalman. LeTourneau quickly regained the advantage after scoring five straight points. Rhodes pulled within one point (19-20) but four straight points for the YellowJackets forced a fifth set.
Tied 3-3, Rhodes secured a 6-3 lead after an ace and back-to-back blocks from a team of Kalman and
Emily Korba. The Lynx took an 11-9 lead after a huge kill from Glasper before the game was again tied 12-all. After a Lynx timeout, a kill by Korba gave Rhodes the edge as did a LeTourneau attack error. The Lynx closed out the win on a kill from the outside by Zimmerman.
Against the YellowJackets, libero
Mary Frances Daniel recorded a career-high 34 digs. Zimmerman led Rhodes with 15 kills including five in the second set alone. Glasper added another 12 while Kalman recorded four blocks. Burke led all setters with 23 assists.
Rhodes is set to host No. 23-ranked Berry on Sunday at noon.
