Memphis - Fans not in attendance at Mallory Gymnasium Sunday afternoon missed a very loud and exciting first set as Rhodes volleyball downed No. 23-ranked Berry 25-19 before ultimately falling to the Vikings 3-1.
Rhodes baseball showed up in abundance to keep officials and line judges in check with every call as they rumbled in the bleachers. With Rhodes leading 9-7, Berry served up two points until they were called for being out of rotation. The officials negated those two points and added a point for the Lynx on the service error, to give Rhodes a 10-7 advantage. Rhodes led 17-14 until three straight points including a joust won by freshman
Drew Kalman and a Lynx block from Kalman and
Emily Korba put Rhodes up by six points. A
Kelsey Glasper kill gave Rhodes a seven-point advantage as did another kill by Korba later in the game (24-17). Rhodes won the set on a kill by Glasper and blocking error from Berry.
A close second set swayed Berry's way despite Rhodes holding a 19-18 lead after a
Heather Antrim kill. Berry would score three unanswered points to take the lead for good. Rhodes pulled within one on a tip by Korba and scored their final points of the set on another tip, this time by
Morgan Hill.
Berry took the third set 25-11 after hitting .393 and holding the Lynx to six kills. In the fourth set, the game was tied 11-11 after a Berry attack error. The Vikings would go on an 8-3 run to open the game, ultimately taking the set 25-16.
Antrim led all attackers for Rhodes with a .211 hitting percentage after recording eight kills on 19 attempts. Senior
Camila Zimmerman recorded the team-high nine kills in the game while sophomore
Mary Frances Daniel tallied 25 digs. Hill and Korba both earned three blocks assists while Korba also recorded three service aces. Glasper also recorded double-digit digs (15) while freshman
Marissa Hall led the Lynx with 16 assists.
Rhodes will return to action for a mid-week matchup on Wednesday when they host Hendrix at 6 p.m.
