Jackson, Miss. - Rhodes College men's soccer battled with the Millsaps Majors Saturday night in their first conference game of the season. After an hour and a half of a lightning delay, Rhodes overtook the hosts 3-0 to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Rhodes junior
Evan McMann netted the game-winner in the 11th minute on an assist from freshman
Tanner McCraney. At halftime the score remained 1-0. All five of Rhodes' first-half goals were on target as Tyler Andrews made four saves in net for Millsaps on his way to seven in the game.
During the second half, tension continued throughout the close contest. Rhodes earned a penalty kick which senior
George Winfrey connected on in the 62nd minute to give Rhodes an insurance goal. Two minutes later, fellow senior goalkeeper
Patrick Wilkerson was given an automatic red card just outside the box. Millsaps missed the free kick, and with Rhodes now down a man, the Majors put more offensive pressure on the Lynx.
During their last victory, McCraney assisted McMann on his first collegiate goal. Tonight the duo would team up yet again to score Rhodes' third goal to secure the shutout. McCraney lifted a cross from near Rhodes' bench to the opposite left post where a leaping McMann netted the goal in the final minutes of the game.
Rhodes will have a week of training before facing one opponent next week. The Lynx will host Birmingham-Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m.
