Memphis - Despite an own goal from Mississippi University for Women (MUW) serving as the game-winner, Rhodes College men's soccer powered past the Owls 11-0 on a hot Sunday afternoon after putting 16 shots on goal. Rhodes improves to 4-2 on the year.
During the 11th minute the Lynx earned a corner and as the Owls tried to clear the ball, senior
Austin Ly one-footed the ball towards the net. A defender for MUW tried to head the ball out of harms way, only to land the ball into the next. Rhodes capitalized on that goal four minutes later when
Ben Tang crossed the ball to an open
Tanner McCraney. McCraney's header went directly over the Owl goalkeeper, earning his first collegiate goal.Â
Rhodes scored four goals in eight minutes of action, beginning in the 52st minute. Sophomore
Rob Morris and senior
Brenden Huie connected to score the first on nine second-half goals for the Lynx. Morris' corner kick found Huie's head near the side of the goal as Huie lofted the ball to the far right corner to give Rhodes a 3-0 lead. Four minutes later Morris scored his first collegiate goal on a free kick five yards outside of the top of the box. Two minutes after that McCraney slipped the ball from the baseline to junior
Evan McMann who tapped in the ball as he fell to the ground to net his first collegiate goal. Rounding out the first four goals of the second half was freshman
Jack Lippe in the 60th minute. He scored his first collegiate goal on a header sent in by Morris on a free kick right in front of Rhodes' bench.Â
Four minutes elapsed until senior
Davis Neitzschman scored on a penalty kick to score Rhodes' seventh goal. Forty-one seconds later, a quick tap from Huie to
Juan Sandoval-Leon allowed the freshman to net his first collegiate goal to the top left corner. Neitzschman then scored his four goal of the season in the 69th minute after a connection from
Ian Schiller. Leading 9-0, the Lynx scored their final two goals in the last six minutes of the game. McCraney scored both, earning a hat trick on the day. Huie's pass from the sideline allowed McCraney to score after his shot hit the right post and bounced in before Morris found a wide open McCraney for the final goal of the game.Â
McCraney tallied seven points in the win with three goals and one assist while Morris tallied one goal and three assists. Huie finished the game with one goal and two assists. In goal, senior
Patrick Wilkerson earned his first start of the season and recorded three saves to earn the shutout.Â
On the season, Rhodes has outscored their opponents 19-5 as they begin conference play this weekend. Rhodes will travel to Millsaps College for their SAA opener, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
