Memphis - Despite producing an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, Rhodes College men's soccer fell in their home opener against Webster University 2-0. The loss is the first shutout for Rhodes this season while the No. 9-regionally ranked Gorloks improve to 6-0 on the year.
After a 0-0 halftime score, Rhodes' best chance came on a cross in the 55th minute which almost led to a goal after a mishandle by the Gorlok goalkeeper. With the Lynx offense in the box, Webster's defense lifted the ball to midfield and a long pass on the ground and up the middle led to the first goal of the game. The Gorloks beat a sliding Lynx goalkeeper
Will Birka-White to the top of the box to net the game-winner.
Webster's Aamahn Murvin lunged a header in for his second goal of the game just two minutes later on a cross from near the corner.
In the game, the Lynx earned 16 shots to Webster's eight with the Gorloks also holding a corner kick edge (6-5).
Birka-White finished the contest with four saves, two of which came on back-to-back shots in the same minute. Freshman
Travis Tuerff led the Lynx with three shots on goal.
Rhodes will look ahead to their next home game this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they host the Mississippi University for Women Owls.
