Men's Lacrosse advance to Sweet 16 after 14-1 victory over Huntingdon

Memphis - Rhodes men's lacrosse earned a decisive 14-1 victory over Huntingdon College Wednesday afternoon at Crain Field. Both teams entered into their first-ever NCAA Tournament with only two losses on the season. Rhodes' win advances them to the third round with No. 3-ranked Gettysburg as the Lynx' next draw in the bracket. Gettysburg will host Rhodes on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST. They will also host Ohio Wesleyan and the winner of tonight's Denison/Illinois Wesleyan contest.

Senior Steven Yowan tallied his first of three goals just under 30 seconds into the game before scoring went quiet for the remainder of the first quarter. When the Hawks turned the ball over on the opening face-off in the second quarter, Yowan, the midfielder from Darien, Conn. took control of the ball and ripped a jumping laser to the bottom of the cage to give Rhodes a 2-0 lead.

Rhodes would go on to score five goals in the second quarter, from five different Lynx with seven earning at a least a point. David Perez tallied a goal and an assist within a minute of each other as the period was ending. The Lynx then scored three goals before Huntingdon's Kendrick Ballard helped the Hawks evade a shutout by scoring their lone goal with 6:55 left in the third period.

Rhodes continued with their 9-1 advantage, netting five more goals including two goals and an assist from Perez. Perez, his brother Matt and Yowan accumulated seven of Rhodes' 14 goals in the win.

Rhodes played all 32-eligible Lynx on the sideline as they tallied a 53-20 shot advantage over the Hawks. The Lynx caused nine of Huntingdon's 20 turnovers in the game with Yowan leading the charge with three. David Perez finished with the game-high five points on three goals nad two assists while J.J. Hoots recorded seven ground balls as he secured 13-of-18 face-offs.

Huntingdon's Matt Murphy stopped 22 shots in cage while Link picked up his 12th win of the year after seven saves.
