Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Second Half Comeback keeps Lynx Unbeaten in SAA Play

Sewanee, Tenn. - Rhodes College men's lacrosse trailed by five goals at halftime, but rebounded for an 8-2 second half advantage to win 11-10 over Sewanee. Both teams entered tonight's cold and rainy contest with undefeated conference records. Rhodes will next head to Centre for a 1 p.m. EST game on Sunday in their final conference game of the season when they look to take sole ownership of the regular season title.

Sewanee scored four straight goals to open the game before Ryan Marasco found the back of the net for the Lynx 10:36 into the game. Marasco dodged around his defender and ripped the shot left handed as rain came pouring down under the lights. Sewanee quickly regained that goal with another one 20 seconds later for a 5-1 lead after the first period.

Steven Yowan and the Lynx score their second goal of the game with nine minutes to play in the second period. The Tigers answered just six seconds later but another Tiger goal was erased after Ryan Fennelly scored from a J.J. Hoots assist.

Trailing 8-3 at halftime, Addison Mueller got scoring started less than two minutes into the second half. Yowan then fired his second goal of the game just six seconds later to spark the Lynx offense. Tyler Milwit then secured Rhodes' third consecutive goal as he ripped a shot from the outside. Rhodes' defensive efforts after Sewanee faceoff wins proved critical as the Lynx would score another for their four straight goal to open second-half play. Ryan Fennelly's relentless defense on Sewanee's goalie on a clear attempt forced a foul by the Tigers, giving the Lynx possession before James Margraff then caused another Tiger turnover which sparked a goal after Fennelly fed Ethan Garland for Rhodes' seventh goal of the game. Sewanee led by one and drew a penalty on the faceoff, allowing them to net their ninth goal during the thirty-second holding penalty.

After a Rhodes timeout, the Lynx were hit with an illegal stick violation for a two-minute non-releasable penalty when Garland scored a man-down goal from Marasco. The Lynx regained possession and waited out the remainder of their penalty, but drew another holding penalty after Sewanee crossed midfield.

A hard hit by the Rhodes defense set up a quick transition when Fennelly assisted Garland once again to cut Sewanee's lead to 10-9 headed into the final period.

After Rhodes received a slashing penalty, Lynx goalie, Cameron Link, came up with a big save, alleviating momentum for the Tigers. Sewanee missed a scoring opportunity and after Link cleared the ball to the 50-yard line, the Lynx took advantage of the fast transition, with Fennelly finding Adrian Mann to tie the game. All three of Fennelly's assists came within 15 minutes of play.

Rhodes took their first lead of the game with 8:30 to go after Milwit scored from the top of the offense. The Lynx then received a stall warning and turned the ball over after a shot that went wide. Link came up with another big save for Rhodes with just over 2:30 to play in the game. After a Sewanee save, the Lynx forced time off the clock as the Tigers began to struggle on the clear, forcing the home team to take their second timeout with 56 seconds left, however the Lynx earned a timely caused turnover, only to turn the ball over themselves and suffer their third holding penalty of the night. That penalty was committed with 10 seconds left, giving Sewanee life. The Tigers ripped two shots from the top left, both wide, handing Sewanee their first conference loss of the season.

On the night, the Lynx totaled five minutes and 30 seconds of infractions as their defense stood strong and only allowed the Tigers to go 1-6 in man-up situations.

Link made four saves in each half including three each in the second and four periods. Garland recorded his first hat trick of the season after stepping onto the field for competition since the first game of the season. Yowan and Milwit each netted two goals while Fennelly led the game with four points.

If Rhodes wins on Sunday, it will be their second consecutive year to go unbeaten in conference play. The Lynx are now 9-2 overall and 5-0 in conference.
