Women's Lacrosse fended off Centre to earn the SAA regular season crown

Danville, Ky. - Rhodes College women's lacrosse defeated Centre College 21-19 on a rainy and windy Saturday to earn their third consecutive regular season conference championship. The Lynx have now finished back-to-back seasons with undefeated conference records within the Southern Athletic Association.

Senior Kendall Cunningham and the Lynx thought they got the game off with the first goal, but it was re-called for a free position attempt, allowing Centre to secure the first goal of the high-profile game. Goals were traded back and forth until the Colonels scored two in a row to lead 5-3 with over 19 minutes left in the half. Rhodes answered with two consecutive goals to tie the game but the Lynx never took the lead in the first half, however Centre never held more than a two-point advantage.

Centre led 11-10 at halftime before the Lynx stormed out of the locker room by scoring four consecutive goals to take a 14-11 lead. The Lynx would never relinquish the lead, gaining as much as a four-point advantage. Rhodes led 16-12 after two consecutive goals by senior Erin Gleeson. Centre pulled within two goals, but wouldn't get any closer.

Olivia Holmes led Rhodes' scoring in the first half with four goals while Cunningham and Ashley Doyle finished the day with five goals and two assists each . Doyle also tallied a career high 14 draw controls.

Senior Maggie Rippeto's first goal of the day was her 200th career goal, which she netted on a free position shot. Rippeto finished with four goals and one assist in the win.

Backup goalie Mallika Rao saved seven of her eight shots in the second half in her first victory of the season.

Centre's Haden Gibbons led the game with nine points on seven goals while teammate Colleen Jackson scored six goals.

As the No. 1-seed, the Lynx will have a bye in the first round of the conference tournament and will host their semifinal game on April 22nd.
