Memphis - Not much home field advantage was to be had for Rhodes men's lacrosse for their conference opener Friday afternoon, but that didn't seem to matter as the Lynx downed Berry College 12-7.
With track and field at home this weekend, the Lynx were forced to play their Friday matchup on Mason Field, home of the women's lacrosse team, which features shorter turf than the men's squad is used to on Crain Field. Rhodes pulled out the victory as a light rain fell throughout most of the game with fans lined up and down the far sideline.
After Rhodes tallied the first goal of the game, Berry recorded their first of three first-period penalties on a late hit. The Lynx led 2-0 before the Vikings tied the game, but the Lynx took advantage of a man-up situation as captain
Ryan Fennelly fed
John Tooher to give Rhodes the lead for good. That goal started what would become a five-goal rally before Berry tallied the final goal of the half.
A much-closer second half saw the Lynx edge the Vikings 5-4 in goals despite Berry holding a 13-6 shot advantage.
In the game,
Cameron Link saved 12 shots for the Lynx. Fennelly finished with two goals and two assists while
David Perez tallied a hat trick.
Tommy Reingruber also had three points on two goals and one assist.
Steven Yowan led the game with six ground balls while he and
James Margraff led Rhodes with three caused turnovers.
Rhodes will return to Crain Field on Sunday when they host Oglethorpe University at noon.
