Montgomery, Ala. - Rhodes College baseball split games on Friday at the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic. The Lynx fell to Methodist 10-3 in the morning, but turned around and defeated Huntingdon 10-5 later that night.
METHODIST
The Monarchs got off to a hot start and led 4-0 after three innings. After a scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth, they added a solo home run to their tally, but not before Rhodes answered with three runs in the eighth. Leading by only two, Methodist recorded five runs in their final at-bat off three hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch.
In the eighth,
Jake Stacy doubled down the left field line and scored after a throwing error on
Brady John's at-bat.
Levi Greenberg singled to score John and
Jon Michael Lauck, who singled on a bunt, scored on
Will Hunt's fielder's choice.
Will Heurtin also doubled and
Zach Liebenson stole a base.
Jack Mercer got the start and struck out four Monarchs.
HUNTINGDON
Starting pitcher
Trey Sledge struck out nine Hawks in six innings, in his third appearance in four games. The right-hander allowed just one run, and is now 1-1 on the year. Sledge fanned two in the first and second innings and struck out the side in the third. He now leads the Lynx with 15 strikeouts over 10 innings on the season.
Rhodes led 2-0 after five innings when
Nick Bosma absolutely crushed a bomb to left field in the sixth. Huntingdon stole home in the bottom half of the inning but Rhodes' 3-1 lead was broken wide open with five runs in the eighth. The Lynx then took a 10-1 advantage headed into the bottom of the ninth, but the Hawks weren't finished and crossed four runs on four hits including two doubles, a walk, sacrifice fly and fielder's choice.
Zac Lange hit a two-run home run to left in the ninth. He finished with a team-high three runs batted in after going two-of-two on the day. Sophomore
Paul Giacomazzi added two RBI and led the defense in center field.
Rhodes will try to play another game against Huntingdon at 11 a.m. in Alabama, depending on the weather.
