Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth Quarter Free Throws lift Rhodes over BSC

Memphis - It was an up-and-down ball game for both teams Sunday afternoon, but Rhodes women's basketball pulled out a 58-47 victory over Birmingham-Southern.

Senior Erin Deery netted three treys early and held nine points with Rhodes' 11-8 lead in the first quarter. Tied 15-15, fellow senior Jessie Ustick drained a three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down to end the first quarter. The Lynx scored nine straight points and held BSC to only four points in the second quarter, two of which came in the final 30 seconds.

Rhodes led 29-19 at halftime, but BSC reversed the role in the third quarter and outscored the Lynx 17-3. Rhodes couldn't connect, making just one of 16 field goal attempts. That all changed in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 36-32, Rhodes posted 26 points in the final 10 minutes of play, 12 of which came from the free throw line. A 14-2 run for the Lynx opened the fourth quarter thanks to Allie Young's blocking, six rebounds and BSC fouls. Alyssa Owens scored 14 of her 16 team-high points in that final frame, and 10 of those were free throws. Young have four blocks on the afternoon, three of which occurred in that same quarter. Ustick's energy level helped fuel the Lynx after she was bench-ridden due to fouls in the third.

In the game, freshman Maya Longacre and Young both tallied 10 rebounds. Deery finished with 11 points and Young also had the team-high four assists.

The Lynx host Welch College on Tuesday in non-conference action before their final home game of the season on Saturday against Hendrix. The two western-most SAA teams will be playing for a second-place seeding in the conference tournament, which will be held at Oglethorpe University. Earlier this year, the Lynx defeated Hendrix at home 67-49. Rhodes is now 15-8 overall and 8-5 in SAA play.
