Memphis - Rhodes men's basketball overcame Birmingham-Southern in Mallory Gymnasium, 115-107. The Lynx are now 12-12 on the season and 6-7 in SAA play.
Tension began midway through the first half when BSC head coach Chris Graves received a Class A technical after he didn't like the call on the court. His technical was immediately followed by a deadball contact technical on Panther Matty Rudack. Answering at the free throw line for the Lynx was senior Anesy Nyawata who drained all four free throws and was followed up with a
D.J. Swift layup to give Rhodes a 21-10 advantage with 13 minutes left to play in the half.Â
The Lynx led 58-51 at halftime despite fouling 14 times. In that first half,
Kendrick Ashby missed just one field goal, drained all three-of-four long balls and recorded two free throws for 13 points. He finished the game with a career-high 20 points and added five rebounds and three steals to his totals.Â
In the second half, an 12-point run gave the Lynx a 79-63 lead. BSC started to come back late in the game and closed the gap to six points, but with only 1:21 left to play, was forced to foul, allowing the Lynx to connect on free throws to finish the game.Â
Preston Giroux's only miss on the afternoon was a free throw and finished with 14 points. The sophomore went five-of-five overall with three of those coming from behind the arc. Nyawata went six-of-seven from the charity stripe, all six made on BSC technicals.
BSC's Deneka Harrison also received a technical with 6:14 left in the second half.Â
