Memphis - Rhodes College men's basketball jumped out to a 17-3 lead over the University of Texas-Tyler, just six minutes into the Sunday afternoon home contest. The Lynx maintained the upper-hand the entire game, before improving to 3-6 this year after their 91-73 victory. UT-Tyler is now 5-6 on the season.
Rhodes' 14-point lead was cut to six points with nine minutes to play in the first half after a three-pointer from Patriot leading-scorer Darius Alford. Rhodes maintained a 12-point advantage until the Patriots went on a 12-2 run, to trail by only two points with just under five minutes to go before the break. The Lynx would fight to a six-point lead by halftime (43-37) before Rhodes ultimately gained a 25-point advantage after a
Daniel Darst three-pointer from near Rhodes' bench in the corner with seven minutes to play.
Rhodes' hot shooting was led by
Bryce Berry with 20 points and six assists. He connected on six-of-12 attempts in the field, which included three treys. Overall, Rhodes averaged 55.4% accuracy in the field and made 18 of 22 free throws. Meanwhile, UT-Tyler averaged 40.9% in the field and made 11 of 18 free throw attempts (61.1%).
Also shooting double digits for Rhodes was Darst with 13 points,
Mac James (12) and
Preston Giroux who tallied 10 points, connecting on all five shot attempts. The game's leading rebounder was Lynx junior
Owen Galvin who brought in 10 defensive rebounds before totaling 11 in the win.
Alford finished with 17 points for UT-Tyler. The Patriots recorded 21 points off turnovers however the Lynx tallied 22 fast break points.
Rhodes will open conference play at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Hendrix College.
