Lynx suffer Loss to Hendrix on Senior Day

Memphis - After leading 14-10, Rhodes College football fell to Hendrix College 30-20 in their final home game of the 2018 season. Prior to the game, Rhodes honored their 14 seniors as well as manager Emily Nilsen.

Rhodes held Hendrix scoreless during the first quarter as Parker Rye recorded the only sack of the night for the Lynx, sending starting quarterback Mason Doerr back five yards in the first quarter to force Hendrix to third and 15. Rhodes took a 7-0 lead when senior Monroe McKay rushed for five yards with nine seconds left in the quarter. Hendrix returned the ball 64 yards on their ensuing drive, but the Lynx defense held strong, and forced the Warriors to a 20-yard field goal. Hendrix took a 10-7 lead after the Lynx fumbled and ball and the Warriors returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. The Lynx then ran 7:03 off the clock on 13 plays, resulting in a Josh Lucas five-yard touchdown reception to give Rhodes a 14-10 halftime advantage.

During the second half, Hendrix ran for 145 yards after rushing just 55 yards in the first half. The Warriors scored 14 points and held the Lynx scoreless in the third quarter. On the Warriors second drive of the second half, Kobe Philalom roped up Kip VanHoose for a loss of five yards. Hendrix opened the fourth quarter with a 40-yard field goal and then converted a 44-yard field goal with 8:47 left in the game to lead 30-14. The Lynx scored on their next drive after senior quarterback PJ Settles made six passes for 84 yards on the 92-yard drive. His final pass, was a 33-yard touchdown reception by Lucas straight down the middle of the field.

Hendrix gained possession of the ball with 5:31 to play. The Warriors had first down on Rhodes' 10-yard line, but a 10-yard holding penalty and Trent Holt tackle for loss of five yards put the Warriors at third and 22. Duke Sherrell came up big, tackling VanHoose after only a gain of two yards, allowing Rhodes to take over on downs after an incomplete pass by the Warriors.

The Lynx took over with 2:36 to play with Settles recording another record-breaking performance, this time in the final home game of his career. Settles entered the game with 10,514 career total offensive yards, and with 234 yards under his belt, connected with Jace Franklin for a 14-yard reception in Rhodes' final drive of the game. That completion broke the Southern Athletic Association's career total offensive yard record, set by former Hendrix quarterback Seth Peters (10,753 yards) in 2016. On fourth and 29, Settles lofted his longest pass of the night, a 49-yard reception to Ethan Chamberlain from Rhodes' own 15-yard line. A Hendrix interception in the end zone for a touchback with 44 seconds remaining ended the game. Settles now has 10,830 yards of total offense after recording 316 yards against Hendrix, including 307 passing yards.

Defensively, Rye recorded a season-high 10 tackles for the Lynx while Holt tallied eight and Jacob Andersen six.

Lucas led all receivers with 110 yards on eight receptions. Dontae Gray ran a kickoff back 26 yards and McKay led Rhodes with 39 rushing yards.

Rhodes will close out the regular season on the road at Austin College on Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
