Austin, Texas - Rhodes College football snapped a four-game losing streak to end their season with a 21-14 road victory over Austin College.
Rhodes scored the only points of the first quarter on a
Crew Jacobs' 27-yard field goal. Austin College answered with a touchdown in the second quarter on a 35-yard pass. Rhodes took a 10-7 lead after marching down the field 79 yards as
Monroe McKay finished with a seven-yard touchdown rush.Â
Opening the second half, the 'Roos scored a touchdown from the one-yard line to lead 14-10 until the Lynx scored another field goal, this time from 22 yards out, just four seconds into the fourth quarter. On the next drive, Austin College chose to punt on fourth and one. Senior quarterback
PJ Settles opened Rhodes' next drive with a 64-yard rush, taking the ball to Austin's nine-yard line. On third and goal from the one-yard line, Settles recorded his seventh rushing touchdown of the season (and 39th career) to give the Lynx a 19-14 advantage. Settles then helped Rhodes extend that lead with a pass to
Adam Martinez for the two-point conversion and forcing Austin College to score at least seven points to tie the game.
The 'Roos couldn't respond on the next drive as
Alden Seger intercepted their pass attempt and ran it back for 10 yards. Rhodes was forced to punt, allowing Austin College to take over with 4:44 to play. The Rhodes defense sent the 'Roos back to their own three yard line after
Trent Holt and
Jordan McCoy teamed up for sack for an 11-yard loss. Four straight passes took the 'Roos to their own 35 yard line. On third and one, Holt and McCoy again teamed up to push Austin College back two yards with 40 seconds to play. The Roo's converted an 11-yard pass, eventually getting to the Rhodes 15-yard line. Jacob Andersen intercepted a pass on Rhodes' one yard line to eliminate a comeback by Austin College.Â
In the game,
D'On Coofer's two tackles were both sacks totaling a loss of 12 yards for the 'Roos. Seger recorded a career-high 10 tackles while
Cody Stockton added another nine for the Lynx.
Kobe Bins also added a tackle for a loss of six yards.Â
Rhodes finished the game with 421 yards of total offense while Austin College totaled 364 yards with 260 of those as passing yards. Rhodes led the game with 276 rushing yards. Settles finished the game with 157 rushing yards and 145 passing yards, finishing his career with 11,132 yards of total offense. McKay totaled 94 rushing yards on the afternoon while Martinez led Rhodes with 42 reception yards including a 30-yard catch.
The Lynx conclude 2018 5-5 on the year and 3-5 in the Southern Athletic Association.Â
