Memphis - Despite injuries and illnesses plaguing the Lynx these days, Rhodes volleyball won the first two sets against one of the top teams in the Southern Athletic Association, before succumbing to Birmingham-Southern 30-28, 25-19, 15-25, 18-25, and 6-15.
Rhodes led 10-7 during the first set, before BSC took a 14-11 lead. Tied at 17-all, BSC scored four straight points before the Lynx secured four unanswere points themselves to tie the game 21-all. Rhodes led 24-22 until BSC froze the server with a timeout and tallied a kill to tie the game once again. Tied at 28-all, an
Emily Korba kill down the line, followed by a team block from
Drew Kalman and
Camila Zimmerman secured the first set victory for Rhodes. That set ultimately took 45 minutes to conclude.Â
In the second set, Rhodes jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Panthers pulled back within range. Tied 10-10, the Lynx went on a 4-1 run before BSC pulled within a point once again (18-17). Five unanswered points for Rhodes (23-17) helped solidify the second set victory.Â
The Panthers dominated the third set, going on a 10-1 run to lead 15-7. In the fourth set, Rhodes led 5-3, but the Panthers re-gained momentum with four straight points and held the lead for the remainder of the set. During the fifth set, a block from
Morgan Hill and Zimmerman gave Rhodes a one-point edge (3-2) until seven unanswered BSC points broke open the match.Â
The Lynx hit .303 in the fourth set with 13 kills, their highest of the day. Zimmerman concluded the game with 12 kills while Hill led the Lynx with a .280 hitting percentage.
Mary Frances Daniel recorded the game-high 29 digs while Kalman recorded five blocks and Hill four blocks.Â
Rhodes will travel to Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest. The Lynx are then at Berry and Oglethorpe next weekend.
