Memphis - Rhodes women's soccer found themselves down a goal at halftime, but the Lynx pulled through with two goals in three minutes over Sewanee, giving eight seniors a 2-1 victory in their final regular season home game. With the win, Rhodes is now 6-4 overall and tied for second in the Southern Athletic Association standings.
Sewanee scored the first goal of the game on a corner in the 12th minute. The Tigers tried to head the ball in but it ricocheted off the Lynx first. Sewanee defender Erin Gill found the loose ball and put it into the back of the net.
Junior
Carly Cone tied the game in the 47th minute. She started in the middle of the box as fellow junior
Katelyn Curtis sent in the corner kick. Cone rushed in to the far post and headed the ball off a Sewanee defender into the goal, almost colliding with the post. The goal is Cone's fourth of the year.
Less than three minutes later, senior
Brenna Katz slipped the ball across the box with a Sewanee defender toeing it towards the goal. The Tiger goalkeeper stopped the ball, but punched it up to the crossbar. Rhodes senior
Jenny Neil was right in front of the goal to tap the game-winner home as the ball fell to the ground, recording her first goal of the season.
Rhodes out-shot the Tigers 18-10 and felt pressure at the end of the game from Sewanee whose two second-half corner kicks came in the final nine minutes of the contest. Senior
Meghan Kiker made five saves in goal for the Lynx.
Rhodes will hit the road this weekend, taking on SAA opponents Berry and Oglethorpe.
