Volleyball falls in five-set heartbreaker to Millsaps

Memphis - Rhodes College volleyball took the first set from Millsaps College Saturday afternoon before suffering a 15-12 fifth-set heartbreaker. The Lynx are now 10-8 on the season and 3-6 in conference as they turn around and host Birmingham-Southern Sunday at noon. 

Rhodes led by as many as eight points (19-11) in the first set before Millsaps tried to make a comeback. Leading 22-16, Rhodes held on for the 25-23 first set victory. In the second set, the Lynx hit .294, their highest of the match, making just two attack errors, the lowest of the game. Millsaps led 20-11 before the Lynx lit up with a 7-1 run to pull within four points. Millsaps led 24-19 before a Rhodes block (Tyler Feddema and Heather Antrim) and kill from Emily Korba staved off the Majors victory for two points. 

In the third set, the Lynx went up 9-2 on five kills and three service aces. With the Lynx leading by one (20-19), Rhodes scored three straight points to force a Millsaps timeout. A kill from freshman Drew Kalman put the game at match-point before the Majors secured another two points. Rhodes won the third set an a Millsaps attack error. In the fourth set, Rhodes trailed by one point before Millsaps took a 14-10 advantage. After a Lynx timeout, Rhodes scored seven straight points to take the lead. Millsaps responded with five straight points of their own to lead 19-17. The two teams were tied at 19 points before a Major 4-1 run gave them a 23-20 advantage. A Kelsey Glasper kill and Kalman ace pulled the Lynx within one point (23-22). Millsaps was able to score the final two points to force a fifth set. 

During the decision set, Rhodes led 5-3 until Millsaps took a 7-5 advantage. A Kalman kill and a Camila Zimmerman ace tied the game before Millsaps went on a 6-1 run to lead 13-8. The Lynx scored four unanswered points to pull within one. The Majors earned the victory on a kill followed by a block. 

Mary Frances Daniel recorded 27 digs in the loss while the Lynx tallied 10 team blocks. Recording double digit kills included Glasper (12), Korba (11) and Zimmerman (10). Marissa Hall led Rhodes with 30 assists followed by Annie Burke with 18. Burke also recorded a team-high five aces. Antrim finished the game with five block assists while Kalman tallied four block assists and one solo block.
