Settles breaks another record in tough Orgill Cup Battle

Sewanee, Tenn. - Rhodes College football saw their six-year win streak in the highly anticipated Orgill Cup matchup against Sewanee broken Saturday afternoon after the Tigers defeated the Lynx 27-14. Rhodes, who has now lost three games in a row, falls to 4-4 on the year and 2-4 in conference. Sewanee is now 4-5 overall and 3-4 in SAA play. 

The Orgill Cup square off against Sewanee dates back to 1984, with Rhodes holding a 35-29-1 record. Today's game broke the all-time series tie as Sewanee now leads 42-41-3.

After recording his 10,000th career offensive yard last week and breaking Rhodes' career rushing mark, senior quarterback PJ Settles needed just 59 yards in the air to become Rhodes' newest career passing leader. After a scoreless first quarter, Sewanee took a 6-0 lead and the Lynx gained possession with 1:48 to play in the first half. Settles found senior Josh Lucas for a 16-yard reception to break the career passing record. Lucas was also Settles' target where he hit his 10,000 yard. Sewanee would re-gain possession and score again to lead 13-0 at halftime. 

The Lynx defense came up big to open the second half. Sewanee tried for a 50-yard field goal on fourth and 11 but was denied by Kobe Philalom who blocked the attempt. Rhodes' offense capitalized and scored on their ensuing possession which included six rushes and a 15-yard reception by Adam Martinez. Settles scored the touchdown on a one-yard rush. 

Sewanee marched down the field on their next possession to score seven more points to finish third quarter scoring. The Lynx cut the Tigers' lead to six after completing six plays on 66 yards in 3:14 in their opening drive of the fourth quarter. A 28-yard pass to Jace Franklin got the Lynx rolling. Settles also found Morgan Koff for a 19-yard completion before the quarterback rushed twice for a total of 26 yards to score the final touchdown of the day for the Lynx. Sewanee used up 6:39 on their next drive to spread out the game and earn the victory. 

Martinez made the longest completion on the day for 45 yards followed by Andrew Herring with a 32-yard reception. The longest rush was by Settles for 26 yards while Cody Stockton led the Lynx defense with six solo tackles, finishing the day with eight tackles. D'On Coofer recorded the other sack for Rhodes, setting Sewanee back six yards. 

Rhodes ran the ball for 243 yards while Sewanee secured just 95 yards on the ground. The Tigers threw for 256 yards while Settles finished with 198 passing yards. He now has 7,680 career passing yards, surpassing the old mark of 7,540 yards. 

Rhodes will host Hendrix at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4th, which is also senior day and Cajun Fest for the Lynx.
