Settles rewrites history books on Homecoming

Memphis - Rhodes football suffered a tough 41-14 loss to Centre College during the 2018 Homecoming festivities for the Lynx, but making noise on the field was senior quarterback PJ Settles who made several milestones during the game.

Rhodes won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. On the opening play, Settles rushed for four yards to break Rhodes' career rushing record, set by Steve Becton with 2,650 yards in 1987. With 18 rushing yards under his belt, the senior became the first Rhodes player to ever achieve 10,000 career offensive yards on a 26-yard pass to fellow senior Josh Lucas. On the day, Settles led the Lynx with 62 yards rushing and finished with 164 yards passing. His career total is now 10,191 yards with three games left in the season.

Lucas' catch was soon erased after Centre forced the wide receiver to fumble the ball with 3:41 left in the first quarter. Leading 7-0, Centre scored two touchdowns before Settles connected with Charlie Mackey with a two-yard touchdown reception. At halftime the Colonels led 28-7 and finished their scoring with two more touchdowns in the third quarter.

Rhodes turned the ball over on downs in their second drive of the third quarter. Junior Trent Holt came up big for the Lynx on second and five when he sacked Centre for a loss of six yards, forcing the Colonels to punt two plays later. On Centre's next drive, which rolled over into the fourth quarter, Chris Brannagan came up big for Rhodes with an interception, returning the ball 70 yards to tally the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter. Centre's Tanner Young was taken to the ground by Holt as he released the ball. During Centre's next drive, D'On Coofer sacked the Colonels' backup quarterback for a loss of eight yards, forcing the visitor's to punt once again.

Holt led the defense with seven sacks including five solo. He made four tackles which sent the Colonels back 13 yards. Coofer finished the game with six tackles and Eric Monroe five tackles. Jordan McCoy also recorded a sack, pulling down Centre's running back in the back field in the second quarter for a loss of three yards.

Morgan Koff made two receptions for 38 yards including a 21-yard catch. Lucas' 26 yard reception was the long for the Lynx on the day with Adam Martinez pulling in a 24-yard reception. Martinez also tallied a 26 yard kickoff return Rhodes. Dontae Gray totaled 49 rushing yards on 10 carries while JaVon Cooper averaged 5.8 yards per rush on four carries. The freshman recorded 23 yards on the day including a 16-yard carry.

Rhodes will be on the road this year fighting for the Orgill Cup next week at Sewanee. Kickoff for the rivalry is set for 1:30 p.m.
