Atlanta, Ga. - Rhodes College women's soccer defeated Oglethorpe University 3-0 Sunday afternoon to improve to 7-4-2 on the year. The shutout puts Rhodes in second place in the Southern Athletic Association standings with a 4-1-1 conference record. The Lynx wrap up regular season play against Hendrix next weekend who is third in the standings with a 4-2 SAA record. Sunday's win against the Stormy Petrels insures a top-four finish for the Lynx, and the right to host the first round of the SAA Tournament, which will begin on October 27th.
Junior
Katelyn Curtis scored her first goal of the year in the 19th minute for the Lynx, the lone goal of the first half. After her initial shot was saved, Curtis reached the rebound before Oglethorpe's defender and goalie and she kicked a slow roller on the ground straight into the left side of the goal.
Senior
Aly Hoyt scored within the first five minutes of the second half. Fellow senior
Rachel Giampapa shot from the left side of the box towards the right corner. Oglethorpe saved the shot and the rebound skipped farther to the right side of the box as Hoyt came in and fired the ball into the goal past the diving goalkeeper.
A miscue by the Oglethorpe defense, allowed senior
Jenny Neil to control the ball in the middle of Oglethorpe's defensive third. She slipped the ball to senior
Brenna Katz who took a couple of dribbles and left-footed the ball directly past the goalkeeper in the 64th minute.
Rhodes held a 35-3 shot advantage against a physical Oglethorpe team who recorded 14 fouls and three yellow cards. Freshman
Abby Roevens tallied two saves to earn her first collegiate victory in goal.
Rhodes will travel to Hendrix on Saturday, October 20th to finish regular season play. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
