Mules tallies Hat Trick in Field Hockey Season-Opening Shutout

Box Score Memphis, Tenn. - It was a hot and sunny 82 degrees for Rhodes field hockey's 11 a.m. season opener at Mason Field. The Lynx scored two minutes into the game as Mackenzie Busby netted the game-winning goal on their way to a 4-0 victory.

Rhodes' offense continued to mount as they recorded 15 shots in the first half alone. The Lynx scored twice more in the first half as sophomore Hailey Mules worked her way to a hat trick, scoring her third goal of the game with under two minutes left to play. Fellow sophomore Lydia Slyter assisted Mules in back-to-back goals in teh first half.

The final goal of the first half was a true team effort. After Wesley goalkeeper Bridget Wood kicked the ball to the top of the circle, the Lynx sent it back to the middle where Slyter slipped a pass to a wide open Mules down by the left post. She sailed the ball to the back of the goal as Wood lept through the air, trying to avoid another Lynx goal. Senior Maddie Smith aided the final goal for the season and home opening victory.

The Lynx were robbed of a would-be fourth goal earlier in the game but Wesley's Kasey Fry made the defensive save. The Wolverines use three goalkeepers during the contest. Wood saved six shots in the first half while Lauren Berry knotched four saves.

The season opener marks the first career win for head coach Lindsay Kasten. The Lynx tallied 13 penalty corners and 22 overall shots. Senior Laura Eckelkamp saved two shots on goal.

Rhodes is on the road for four games, only returning home to host an opponent over Parents and Family Weekend. The Lynx travel to Wittenberg Saturday, followed by DePauw on Sunday. The team then travels to Maryland to take on Johns Hopkins and Christopher Newport. For their next home game, they'll host Belmont Abbey on Sep. 23 before opening conference play against first-year SAA affiliate member Concordia Wis. on Sunday the 24th.
