Memphis - Rhodes college volleyball ended their four-game drought Saturday afternoon by defeating Sewanee in four sets. It was the Tigers' first conference game of the year as the Lynx won 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23. Rhodes is back in action at home tomorrow when they host Centre College at noon.
Rhodes trailed Sewanee during the first set until a block by
Lulu Schulz and
Morgan Hill have the Lynx their first lead of the game. Sewanee recorded an ace to lead 18-17, but then the host squad scored five points in a row while Schulz was serving, their largest lead of the game. Sewanee came back to tie the game 23-23, but a kill from
Caroline Perlis and a team block from Perlis and
Elasha Williams sealed the set victory.Â
Rhodes trailed the entire second set, falling 25-22 as the team recorded just nine kills on 47 attempts. Libero
Sophia Quesada was busy in the back row, tallying 11 digs while
Camila Zimmerman added 10 to Rhodes' second-set totals.
The Lynx came out swinging in set three, determined to go ahead. In the end, Rhodes hit .293 during the third set, the high for the match. Williams was on target, tallying six kills on 12 attempts with only one attack error. Rhodes led 9-8, never allowing Sewanee to take the lead the remainder of the set. The Lynx posted back-to-back blocks as Schulz teamed up with Williams and
Emily Korba for two blocks. After a Tiger attack error, Coach Laurendine wanted a timeout, but Schulz wasn't having it. The junior middle blocker struck for the kill to give Rhodes a 13-9 advantage. Leading 13-12, Rhodes scored five straight points and eventually led by six points (22-16) during the third set. Rhodes kept Sewanee under 20 points as they finished for a 2-1 advantage headed into the fourth and final frame.Â
Set four was much closer, with both teams trading the lead. With the game tied 16-16, Rhodes tallied four straight points. Their 20th point came from a Williams back row attack. The Tigers fought back, taking a 21-20 lead. The teams tied at 21, 22 and 23 each before Schulz put down a kill to put Rhodes within a point of victory. The Lynx won the match on Williams' 16th kills of the game.Â
The strong Lynx defense helped lift them to their first Southern Athletic Association win. Quesada recorded 32 digs and Zimmerman 20. Schulz totaled a game-high seven blocks on the day. Perlis finished with four blocks and a .429 hitting percentage which included seven kills.
Sewanee's Destiny Stewart led the game with 22 kills while libero Peyton Parent led with 35 digs.
