Baltimore, Md. - Rhodes College field hockey took to the air Thursday for their games this weekend on the campus of Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Today, the Lynx competed against the Blue Jays, facing a new opponent, but familiar face in JHU's head coach Jane Wells. It's Wells' first year at JHU after heading the Lynx for the last 12 years.
Rhodes barely missed out on an early lead when
Mackenzie Busby's stroke in the fourth minute just went wide. As play continued, both teams wrapped up multiple penalty cards during the game.Â
Rhodes struck first.
Maddie Smith tried to put in her first goal of the season, but was blocked by JHU's goaltender. Smith then passed from near the left side goal to the middle where
Lauren Travis buried the first goal of the game to give Rhodes a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. The Blue Jays tied the game just two minutes later off of a corner. Rhodes senior goalkeepre
Laura Eckelkamp made the initial save, but JHU gathered the rebound. The Blue Jays sealed the win in the 75th minute for the 2-1 victory.
Rhodes is now 2-2 on the year. In the game, Eckelkamp made 15 saves to force overtime before notching another one in the third period. JHU held a 27-17 shot advantage and 20-13 penalty corner advantage.
Johns Hopkins is now 4-1 on the year while Rhodes looks ahead to No. 18-ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday. The Lynx will take to the field for a 10 a.m. EST neutral-site contest held at Johns Hopkins.
