SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Rhodes College baseball team took control of both the series over Sewanee, as well as second place in the SAA Standings as they took two over their rivals by the score of 4-2 and 12-5 (7).
In the first game, the arm of senior
Blake Glauben, along with a big three run sixth inning, was the difference in a 4-2 win over the Tigers.
Glauben pitched seven complete, allowing two runs off four hits and striking out 10 in the contest. Glauben earned the win to move to 2-3 overall on the season as he has been in mid-season form the last few weeks.
Rhodes took the early 1-0 lead thanks to an error by the Tigers defense, but Sewanee tied it in the third and took the lead, 2-1, in the fifth.
The Lynx got it back in the sixth inning as senior
Zac Lange came through with a clutch hit, singling to left and scoring two in the process to push Rhodes ahead 3-2. Moments later, sophomore
Nick Bosma belted a double to left center to make it a 4-2 lead.
Junior
Will Vance put the finishing touches on the contest, pitching the final two innings and allowing only one hit in the process as Rhodes picked up the victory.
Lange finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Bosma was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Seniors
Bill Munson and
Ryan Olive each had a hit and a run scored in the contest.Â
In the second game, a 5-for-5 day from sophomore
Jacob Telli ignited a 19 hit game as Rhodes picked up a 12-5 win.
Telli got the offensive moving in the first with a RBI double to left for a 1-0 lead. Olive and freshman
Ryan Palermo followed with RBI as Rhodes took a 3-0 lead after only one inning.
A wild pitch in the second made it 4-0 while a RBI single by junior
Levi Greenberg made it 5-1 in the third. The Lynx put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring five runs in the inning to take a 10-1 lead thanks to homers from Bosma and Telli as well as RBIs from freshman
Paul Giacomazzi and Munson.
Munson and Olive added a RBI each in the sixth as Rhodes didn't let Sewanee get any momentum to get back in the game despite some late runs, winning 12-5 (7) to clinch the series.
Freshman
Alex Garrett earned the win, pitching five complete and allowing four runs on six hits. Sophomore
Ben South pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts while freshman
Tom Coggins finished it off in the seventh.
Telli was 5-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Giacomazzi was 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Greenberg was 3-for-5 with a double, a RBI, and run scored. Bosma scored two runs including his bomb while Munson had a two hit, two RBI, two run game.
Rhodes moves to 16-15 overall and 8-6 in the SAA, in control of second place by two games. The Lynx will look to complete the sweep on Sunday as they battle the Tigers on the road at 12 PM.
