MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team came away with 20 hits to race out to a 10-1 lead as they rolled the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels by the score of 10-4 in the first round of the SAA Baseball Championship.
The Lynx jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. After senior
Bennett Notestine singled via bunt, senior
Bill Munson laced a deep homer to left field to put the Lynx in control early on.
In the third, Rhodes made it a 3-0 game to a RBI double down the left field line by sophomore
Nick Bosma. Moments later, junior
Levi Greenberg singled to the catcher on a bunt while an error on the throw scored Bosma to make it 4-0.
Earlier in the third, senior
Blake Glauben got out of a bases loaded, one out situation and then proceeded to strike out six of the next seven batters en route to an impressive nine strikeout outing.
Rhodes exploded for four more runs in the fifth as Bosma scored on a balk followed by a RBI single from senior
Zac Lange. Freshman
Paul Giacomazzi singled to center while Notestine singled on a bunt and took advantage of another error to make it an 8-0 game.
Rhodes tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a two RBI single from senior
Ryan Olive to move ahead 10-1. Oglethorpe got a few more runs back late, but it was not enough as Rhodes shut the door for the 10-4 win.
Glauben pitched six complete, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out nine. Junior
Will Vance saw an inning of work while sophomore
Ben South as perfect in an inning of relief. Freshman
Nathan Mirochnick finished things out.
Offensively, the entire starting lineup had a hit including eight of nine batter with one of more hit. Giacomazzi, Notestine, and Lange all had three hit games while Giacomazzi and Notestine scoring twice. Munson, Olive, Bosma, Greenberg, and sophomore
Jacob Telli all had two hits as Munson and Olive each had two RBIs.
Rhodes will move along the winners bracket as they take on the winner of Hendirx and Millsaps tomorrow afternoon at 11 AM at Stauffer Field.
