Baseball Uses Late Rally to Knock Off Hendrix at SAA Championship

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team moved one step closer to the SAA Championship Game Series as they came-from-behind to defeat the Hendrix Warriors 5-3 thanks to an excellent outing from both Nick Ferngren and John Medich.

Hendrix got an early run in the first inning thank to a RBI double. They held on to that one run lead early on as Colin Brown was dealing on the mound, keeping a hot Lynx offense off the board through five innings of play.

However, Rhodes kept Hendrix off the board as well, keeping them to their lone run as Ferngren began to get in a rhythm on the mound.

With one out in the sixth, senior Bill Munson reached on a hit by pitch while sophomore Jacob Telli walked to bring up senior Ryan Olive. Olive came through with a clutch hit as he singled through the right side to score one and tie the game.

Sophomore Nick Bosma followed with a beautifully placed bunt on a safety squeeze to bring home Telli and take their first lead of the game. Moments later, sophomore Chris Winter flied deep to center for a sac fly to make it a 3-1 game.

Rhodes made it a 5-1 game in the seventh, tacking on two more as Rhodes took advantage of a Hendrix error on a sac bunt by senior Bennett Notestine while senior Bill Munson ripped a single down the left field line.

Hendrix got one back in the eighth and loaded the bases with no outs, bringing in freshman John Medich. Medich proceeded to get a foul out to first, a strikeout, and a ground out to end the inning and keep Rhodes ahead 5-2.

The Warriors got another run across in the ninth, but Medich closed the door for his second save of the season and send the Lynx into Sunday's game with whoever emerges on Sautrday between Hendrix, Millsaps, and Oglethorpe.

Ferngren pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits including a strikeout. Sophomore Ben South added 0.2 innings of work while freshman Jake Medich closed it out, pitching two complete and allowing only one run to go with three strikeouts.

Freshman Paul Giacomazzi led the offense with a 2-for-4 day while Munson, Olive, and sophomore Brady John all had a hit. Senior Zac Lange earned a pair of walks as well.

The team that will face Rhodes will have to win twice to eliminate Rhodes, while the Lynx only need a single win on Sunday to advance and face the winner of the Birmingham pod for the SAA Championship. First game is scheduled at 11 AM from Stauffer Field.
