CONWAY, Ark. - Junior
Nick Ferngren struck out 10 batters in five innings of relief as the Rhodes College baseball team earned a 4-3 (7) come-from-behind win over Hendrix in game two. The Warriors won the first game 6-3 to split the series.
Rhodes found themselves down 3-0 after two innings of play in game two. Ferngren checked in in the third inning of the seven inning game and went on to completely shut down the Warrior offense, pitching all five innings, allowing one hit, and striking out 10 in the process.
The Lynx began to get back into the contest, scoring three in the third inning thanks to RBI singles from freshman
Paul Giacomazzi and senior
Bennett Notestine. Giacomazzi would score on a wild pitch to even it at three.
Notestine would late score on a wild pitch in the fifth which proved to be the go-ahead run. It was all Ferngren needed as he moved to 2-2 overall with his second 10 strikeout outing this season.
Giacomazzi and Notestine each finished 2-for-3 with a RBI while Giacomazzi scored twice. Sophomore
Brady John had the only other hit in the contest.
In the first game, the Warriors used a four run first inning and added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-0 lead early on. Senior
Zac Lange drove in one in the seventh while sophomore
Jacob Telli and senior
Ryan Olive drove in one each in the eighth, but Rhodes fell short in the game despite 12 hits.
Senior
Blake Glauben took the loss, pitching six complete and striking out four. Freshmen
Trey Sledge and
Nathan Mirochnick combined for two innings of scoreless ball to hold Hendrix.
Notestine, Olive, senior
Bill Munson, and freshman
Jon Michael Lauck all had two hits while Notestine, Munson, and sophomore
Nick Bosma all scored a run. The Lynx left 10 runners on in the first game.
Rhodes moves to 18-17 overall and continues to hold onto second in the SAA at 10-7. They take on Hendrix in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM.
