Strong First Half Keeps Lynx Lax Unbeaten in Win Over Aurora

MEMPHIS - A strong first half from the Rhodes College women's lacrosse team pushed them to 11-0 on the season as they rolled by the Aurora Spartans by the score of 19-6 on Thursday afternoon at Mason Field.

The Lynx out shot the Spartans 45-15 and forced 24 turnovers on the afternoon including 16 in the first half. Rhodes picked up 37 ground balls and won 20 of 27 draw controls.

Rhodes was clicking on all cylinders early on, scoring eight goals in the first 11 minutes as juniors Kendall Cunningham and Erin Gleeson each scored two a piece for the 8-0 least. Juniors Ashley Doyle, Maggie Rippeto, and Olivia Holmes along with sophomore Annika Hedlund each had a goal.

Aurora responded with a goal before freshman Kaeley Bennett scored back-to-back goals with a man down followed by two more goals by Cunningham and a goal from Rippeto to take a 13-2 lead at the break.

In the second half, Aurora looked to settle in and make something of the match, getting it down to 10 on a couple of occasions and forcing the Lynx into unforced errors.

However, Rhodes pushed forward and kept the momentum on their side as Gleeson scored two more goals in the half while Cunningham, Holmes, Hedlund, and senior Ashley Dill all added on each to bring the tally to 19-6.

Rippeto finished with 10 points on the afternoon, scoring three and assisting on seven, while Gleeson had five points, netting a career-high four goals to go with an assist. Cunningham had four points on four goals while Holmes had three with two goals and an assist.

Doyle, Hedlund, and Bennett each had two points with Doyle's coming on a goal and an assist while Dill had a goal and senior Lindsay Gess notched an assist on the afternoon.

Defensively, Cunningham caused five turnovers while Holmes, Dill, and freshman Madison Rubino all had two. Doyle and junior Rachel Windmueller picked up five ground balls each while Holmes and Dill added four and Cunningham, Rubino, and Rippeto had three. Dill had five draw controls on the day.

Freshman Lauren Lazure earned the start in goal and had a nice day, finishing with six saves.

The Lynx, already at 11 games played in early March, will take some much needed time off. They return to the field on Monday, March 20th as they welcome in Kalamazoo at 4 PM.
