CONWAY, Ark. - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse opened up Southern Athletic Association play on Wednesday evening, picking up a 9-7 victory over Hendrix College on the road.
The Lynx held off a scrappy Warriors team, out shooting them 33-29 and forcing them into 24 turnovers. Rhodes was 8 of 17 in face offs while picking up 36 ground balls and going 18 of 21 in clear attempts.
Freshman
Ethan Garland got the Lynx on teh board in the first quarter to even the game at one at the time, but Hendrix took a 2-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
Rhodes used the next two quarters to take control of the match, beginning by scoring four consecutive goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 advantage. Four different Lynx found the back of the net in sophomore
John Tooher, senior
Mike Knudsen, senior
Jason Lee, and freshman
Tristan Brunet.
The Warriors responded with two goals right before the half to make it a 5-4 game.
Rhodes dominated the third quarter, out shooting the Warriors 10-2; however, the scoring did not come until the final three minutes of the quarter when Rhodes scored three consecutive goals..
Sophomore
David Perez got the scoring started followed by a goal by junior
Steven Yowan to make it a 7-4 game. Rhodes took the momentum into the final quarter as senior
Matthew Jones scored as time expired to lead 8-4 going into the final quarter.
Hendrix got a goal back, but senior
Ryan Fennelly all but put the match away with a goal in the fourth to keep the lead at four. Hendrix scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes, but it was not enough as the Lynx came away victorious.
Tooher led the way with three points with a goal and two assists while Fennelly, Knudsen, and Lee each had two points with a goal and an assist. Tooher added three caused turnovers and four ground balls while junior
John Snyder had three caused turnovers.
Freshman
James Margraff finished with six ground balls and two caused turnovers while Yowan had five ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior
John Wancowicz added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore
Cameron Link finished with 11 saves in the win.
Rhodes is now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAA. They will prepare to head to Clearwater, Fla. as they will do battle with Swarthmore in a non-conference battle beginning at 1 PM ET at the Countryside Sports Complex.
