CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season after allowing seven goals in the second quarter in a 12-6 loss to the Swarthmore College on Friday afternoon.
Despite the tough loss, Rhodes out shot Swarthmore 29-27 including a 20-11 advantage in the second half. Rhodes forced the Garnet into 17 turnovers and picked up 29 ground balls.
Junior
Ryan Fennelly scored the opening goal of the game four minutes into it for the early lead, but the Garnet scored the next seven goals going into the second quarter. Fennelly scored his second goal of the half, but Swarthmore added one more goal with four seconds left to take an 8-2 lead at the break.
Rhodes began to climb back into the match, getting a pair of goals in the third quarter from freshmen
Addison Mueller and
Matt Perez to make it an 8-4 game. The Lynx opened up the fourth quarter with goals from sophomore
John Tooher and Fennelly to cut the deficit to two goals.
Two minutes later, Fennelly nearly made it a one goal game, but his shot went begging off the post. Swarthmore went on to close the game with four unanswered goals to pick up the 12-6 win.
Fennelly finished with four points on three goals and an assist while Tooher had three with a goal and two assists. Perez and Mueller each had a point with a goal.
Senior
John Wancowicz finished with three caused turnovers while freshman
James Margraff had two caused turnovers and five ground balls. Fennelly and Tooher each had three ground balls in the contest. Sophomore
Cameron Link finished with 10 saves in the contest.
Rhodes moves to 6-1 on the year and will return home on Tuesday evening as they welcome in Concordia (WI) at 7 PM.
