Lynx Men's Lax Close Out Concordia (WI) in Crunch Time for Clutch Win

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final eight minutes of play to pick up a key home victory over the Concordia (WI) Falcons, 7-5, on Tuesday evening at Crain Field.

The Lynx out shot the Falcons 34-24 and picked up 32 ground balls to Concordia's 23. Rhodes forced 19 Falcon turnovers and had a strong day in the face off department, winning 9 of 15. 

The Falcons scored three of the first four goals to move ahead 3-1 in the first quarter. Senior Jason Lee scored the only goal of the quarter for Rhodes to tie it at one at the time, but two Concordia goals gave them the two goal advantage after one.

Rhodes got back in the match by dominating the second quarter. Freshman Ethan Garland opened the quarter with a goal followed by the Lynx taking advantage of a Falcon turnover and turning it into points as junior Ryan Fennelly found sophomore Tyler Milwit for a goal to tie it at three.

Lee closed the quarter with his second goal of the game to put Rhodes ahead 4-3 and give them the lead going into the break.

The Falcons opened the second half with a goal to even the game at four, but sophomore David Perez put the Lynx back ahead as they took a 5-4 lead into the final quarter.

Concordia scored a goal three minutes into the fourth to tie it back at five, but Fennelly had an answer, scoring the go-ahead goal with under nine minute to play at 6-5.

In an intense final minutes, Garland came away with a huge turnover in a man-up situation and found Milwit for a goal to move ahead 7-5 and all but put the game away. The Rhodes defense stepped up in the minutes and the Lynx offense played keep away in the final minutes to close the match for the win.

Four different Lynx had two points led by Lee and Milwit with a pair of goals and Fennelly and Garland with a goal and assist each. Perez added a goal while sophomore John Tooher had an assist.

Tooher led the way defensively with two caused turnovers and five ground balls while Fennelly also had two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Freshmen James Margraff and J.J. Hoots had three ground balls while Hoots was 9 of 14 in face offs. Sophomore Cameron Link finished with five saves and a caused turnover.

The Lynx move to 7-1 overall and will return to action on Thursday as they welcome in Skidmore to Crain Field for a 6 PM matchup.
