MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead while holding off the Bridgewater Eagles in the second half for an 8-6 win to move to 5-0 overall.
The Lynx out shot the Eagles 33-20 as well as 19 shots on goal and forcing 27 Eagle turnovers. Rhodes picked up 28 ground balls and were 11 of 12 in clear attempts on the evening.
After Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead, Rhodes scored two straight goals in the first behind goals from junior
Tommy Reingruber and sophomore
John Tooher to move ahead 2-1. Bridgewater added their second goal of the day with three minutes to play to tie things up at two at the end of one.
Rhodes took over with a big second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 3-0 to take control of the match.Â
Tooher got things started in the period with a beautiful goal 30 seconds into the quarter followed by goals by sophomore
Tyler Milwit and freshman
Addison Mueller to give the Lynx a 5-2 lead at the break.
Bridgewater would score three goals in the third quarter, but Rhodes got goals from Tooher and freshman
David Jones to take a 7-5 lead going into the final quarter.
Rhodes used a strong defensive effort, along with Milwit's second goal, to nearly shutout the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Bridgewater scored their final goal with four seconds to play, but it was not enough as the Lynx picked up the 8-6 victory.
Tooher scored three goals while Milwit added two. Jones, Reingruber, and Mueller finished off the scoring while junior
Ryan Fennelly added an assist late in the contest.Â
Freshman James Margrass finished five ground balls and a caused turnovers while Milwit had four ground balls and senior
Mike Knudsen, senior
John Wancowicz, and sophomore
Matthew Simon all had three. Wancowicz, Simon, and freshman
J.J. Hoots all had two caused turnovers.
The Lynx will prepare to start conference play on Wednesday as they head to Conway, Ark. for a 7 PM matchup against Hendrix College in their Southern Athletic Association opener.
