ATLANTA, Ga. - After a miserable day last night thanks to a complete performance from the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, the Rhodes College baseball team regrouped and proceeded to take two from the Stormy Petrels on Saturday afternoon to win the series, 5-3 and 10-5 (7).
In the third and deciding game, the Lynx used a five run seventh thanks to clutch hitting from senior
Ryan Olive and sophomore
Nick Bosma to clinch the series and go to 2-1 in SAA play.
In the first game, freshman
Jacob Dubs continues to dazzle in his rookie debut, pitching 7.1 innings and striking out 10 Petrels to move to 4-0 on the season. Junior
Nick Ferngren pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless, hitless ball to earn his first save of the year.
Freshman
John Medich put Rhodes ahead 1-0 on a RBI single in the second. After Oglethorpe evened the score in the fifth, senior
Bennett Notestine stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in two to push Rhodes ahead 3-1.
Moments later, junior
Zach Liebenson doubled to make it a 4-1 games. The following inning, freshman
Paul Giacomazzi scored on a balk to make it 5-1. Oglethorpe got a pair of runs back in the eighth, but it was not enough as Rhodes evened the series with the 5-3 win.
Notestine finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as well as two stolen bases. Giacomazzi finished 2-for-5 with a run scored while Olive and Bosma were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.
In the rubber match, Giacomazzi got the scoring started with a RBI on a fielder's choice in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Oglethorpe responded with three runs in the bottom half to move ahead 3-1.
In the top of the third, freshman
Ryan Palermo grounded out to score a run while senior
Zac Lange put down a beautiful bunt, but a throwing error resulted in two runs scoring to put Rhodes ahead 5-3.
The Stormy Petrels got one back in the fifth and one back in the sixth to even it at five a piece moving into the final inning.
Rhodes loaded the bases with two away where Olive ripped a double down the left field line, scoring two, and taking a 7-5 lead. Bosma followed that up with a monster home run to left to make it a 10-5 game and seal the victory and the series.
Senior
Jackson Lourie ultimately earned the win, moving to 1-1 on the season. He pitched 2.0 innings, allowing only one run on one hit, but striking out two. Junior
Jack Mercer got the start, pitching four complete and allowing four runs on nine hits while freshman
Trey Sledge pitched one inning, striking out two batters and only allowing a single hit.
Bosman finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored, and the long ball while Olive was 1-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Giacomazzi went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while sophomore
Brady John and Lange each had two hits and a run scored. Sophomore
Jacob Telli drew two walks as well as a hit by pitch and scored two runs.
The Lynx are now 7-6 on the season and 2-1 in the SAA as they move into their spring break trip. They head down from Atlanta to Winter Haven, Fla., opening things on Monday with a 3 PM ET matchup against Concordia (IL).
