Baseball Comes-From-Behind to Pick Up Win Over DII Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Rhodes College baseball team erased a three run deficit including five runs in the final three innings as they defeated Division II cross-town rival Christian Brothers by the score of 6-3 at Nadicksbernd Field on the campus of CBU.

Rhodes, who pitched by committee all afternoon, found themselves in a 3-0 hole after four innings of play as they struggled to figure out the pitch by committee of the Buccaneers early on.

A RBI groundout by sophomore Brady John put the Lynx within two runs, but it was not until the seventh inning when freshman Paul Giacomazzi and senior Ryan Olive each drove in a run to even the game at three.

Rhodes, turning the momentum on a dime, took the lead in the eighth inning as sophomore Jordan Baker stole home and senior Zach Lange stole third for Rhodes' first lead of the game at 4-3.

The Lynx added some insurance runs in the ninth as Olive drove in his second round of the day and eventually score on a wild pitch to make it a 6-3 game.

Junior Jack Mercer closed the game out with his first save of the season, striking out two in the process, as the Lynx earned the come-from-behind win over their crosstown rivals.

Nine different pitchers threw an inning of work as freshman Trey Sledge got the start, allowing two runs in his outing. Freshman Nathan Mirochnick, sophomore Matt Dale, and freshman Alex Garrett worked the next three innings followed by freshman Jake Medich and junior Will Vance.

Sophomore Cameron Tinker entered the seventh inning and was credited with the win, moving to 1-1 on the season. Junior Nick Ferngren and Mercer closed the game out, combining to strike out three Bucs in the process. Mirochnick was the only other Lynx to have two strikeouts in his outing as Rhodes struck out nine on the day and only allowed two walks.

Giacomazzi finished 2-for-4 with a double, triple, a RBI, and a run scored while Olive went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Lange added a 1-for-2 day with a double, two stolen bases, and a run scored while John drove in a run.

Sophomore Jacob Telli, freshman Ryan Palermo, sophomore Will Hunt, and freshman Jon Michael Lauck all added a hit on the day while Baker swiped a pair of bases on the afternoon.

Rhodes moves to 14-12 overall and has won six of their last seven. The Lynx will focus on conference play beginning on Saturday as they have a tough SAA series with current No. 1 seed and nationally-ranked Birmingham-Southern. The Lynx and 5th-ranked Panthers square off at BSC, the site of last year's SAA Championship Series, with a first pitch of a doubleheader at 1 PM.
