Lynx Baseball Closes Spring Break with Losses to Keystone, Heidelberg

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Rhodes College baseball team closed their 2017 spring break trip with a pair of losses, falling to Keystone, 3-2, before an 11-7 (8) loss to Heidelberg later that afternoon.

In the first contest, the Lynx got another terrific effort from freshman Jacob Dubs, pitching 6.2 innings and striking out six; however, he would be credited with his first loss of the season.

Rhodes took a 2-1 lead after three thanks to RBIs from junior Levi Greenberg and freshman Ryan Palermo, but the Giants got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 3-2 and walk away with the win.

Sophomore Matt Dale pitched 0.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out one while freshman Alex Garrett was perfect in 0.2 innings of work, allowing no hits.

Palermo went 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored while senior Ryan Olive was 1-for-3 with three stolen bases. Telli was 1-for-3 with a run scored while sophomore Jon Michael Lauck and sophomore Nick Bosma each added hits.

Against Heidelberg, the Lynx jumped out to a 7-1 lead through six innings. Sophomore Brady John got the Lynx on the board as he walked in a run with the bases loaded. Senior Bennett Notestine followed with a RBI single that followed with two more runs scoring thanks to an error by Heidelberg.

A squeeze play from junior Zach Liebenson made it 5-1 while another error moved the score to 6-1 after three.

Rhodes looked to be in complete control in the sixth as Telli blasted his second home run of the week to put the lead at 7-1.

However, Heidelberg scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to move ahead 11-7. Rhodes could not get any runs back in the bottom of the eighth as the game was called due to darkness in the Florida area.

Notestine was 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI while Telli finished 1-for-1 with a RBI and three runs scored. Olive, Bosma, and sophomore Ben Siegel all had a hit in the contest.

Junior Nick Ferngren got the start, pitching only 2.1 innings despite allowing no earned runs on two hits. Ferngren walked five batters. Freshman Alex Garrett had a nice outing pitching 3.2 innings and only allowing one earned run on one hit.

Rhodes had six different pitchers come to the mound in the game. Senior Jackson Lourie took the loss for the Lynx to move to 1-2.

The Lynx move to 8-10 on the season and will now return to Memphis. They are back in action on Saturday, March 18th as they return home to Stauffer Field to take on Millsaps in a three game SAA series. First pitch of a doubleheader is at 12 PM.
