BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rhodes College women's basketball team earned their first win of the 2016-17 season on the road and their third consecutive win overall as they defeated the top team in the Southern Athletic Association, Birmingham-Southern, by the score of 47-40 at Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Lynx held BSC to 29% shooting from the field and 20% from deep while forcing 14 turnovers. The Lynx shot 30% from the field and 20% from behind the arc, but used a strong fourth quarter to outscore the Panthers 19-9 in the final period.
It was a slow start in the first quarter as both teams were even with Rhodes holding a slight 9-8 advantage as they scored the final five points of the quarter behind a three pointer from sophomore
Sara Giesen and a jumper from sophomore
Allie Young.
In the second quarter, the Lynx again closed the quarter strong as they went on an 10-2 after behind down 14-11 to take a 21-16 lead at the break. Young scored eight points while Giesen had five.
In the third quarter, BSC seemed to get it rolling as they immediately got it down to two and eventually took the lead at 26-25 thanks to a 3-pointer at the 5:35 mark. THe Panthers would extend their lead to 31-28 at the end of three.
In the fourth quarter, Rhodes took the lead back as they scored the first six points of the quarter behind buckets from Young, juniors
Erin Deery, and senior
Bailey Kramer to lead 34-31.
The Panthers would get it back down to one, but Rhodes got big layups from sophomore
Danielle Summers and Deery go ahead 39-35 with three minutes to play. BSC got it down to one with under a minute to play, but a huge 3-pointer from Giesen was the dagger Rhodes needed to pull the upset over BSC.
Giesen led the way with 12 points as she scored the final six points for Rhodes. Young added 10 points and two steals while Kramer and Deery each had nine points. Kramer pulled down eight rebounds, junior
Jessie Ustick pulled down seven, and Deery had five. Summers was excellent off the bench with five points and three steals.
The Panthers were led by Emilee Olsen with 12 points and 14 rebounds while Jothani DIxon had eight points and four assists.
Rhodes moves to 4-17 overall and 3-7 in the SAA and will look to continue their hot play as of late as they head to Jackson, MIss. for a matchup with Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon at 1 PM.
