MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse erased a 7-5 deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime where junior
Ryan Fennelly scored the game winning goal to give Rhodes a thrilling 9-8 victory.
The Redmen out shot the Lynx, 41-30, but Rhodes had 14 shots on target and forced nine turnovers in the match. The Lynx were also a perfect 13 of 13 in clear attempts.
Freshman
Addison Mueller gave the Lynx the early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, but Carthage responded with a goal two minutes later to even it at one. Junior
Ryan Fennelly made it a 2-1 early in the second qurter, but three straight goals from the Redmen gave them a 4-2 lead.
Mueller scored his second goal of the game before halftime to make it a 4-3 game going into the break.
Carthage opened the third quarter by taking a 5-3 lead, but sophomore
John Tooher scored just before the end of the quarter to make it a 5-4 game.
However, the Redmen, again, opened the quarter with a goal to take a 6-4 lead as it looked as though they were in command of hte game.
The Lynx responded by scoring three goals in the next 1:30 as freshman
Ethan Garland, sophomore
Tyler Milwit, and Tooher all scored goals to take an 8-7 advantage. Carthage responded with a goal with 4:42 remaining to tie it at eight and move the game into overtime.
After a scramble for the loose ball on the face off, Rhodes came away with the ball and took possession in overtime. One minute into the extra period, Fennelly came away with the game winning goal to end the match and send the crowd into a frenzy as the Lynx remained unbeaten.
Fennelly scored a pair of goals while Tooher and Mueller each had a goal and an assist. Garland also had an assist on the game while seniors
Matthew Jones and
Jason Lee as well as junior
Justin Powers each had an assist.
Freshman
James Margraff had four ground balls while Fennelly had three and senior John Wacowicz, junior
Steven Yowan, and Powers all had two ground balls. Wancowicz and Yowan each had a caused turnover as well. Sophomore Camera Link had nine saves in the contest.
Rhodes moves to 3-0 on the season and will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on the Huntingdon Hawks at 1 PM.
