Bill Munson and
Ryan Olive each drove in three runs while senior
Bennett Notestine and sophomore
Nick Bosma drove in a pair of runs as Rhodes banged out 15 hits in an 11-5 home opening win over Fontbonne.
Five Lynx had two hits or more as the Lynx lit up the Griffins pitching. Fontbonne jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Rhodes scored 10 runs in the next eight innings for the win.
After Fontbonne took a 1-0 lead in the first, Olive drop home a run in the first, scoring Munson on a groundout to tie things up. However, the Griffins chased starter
Nathan Mirochnick in the second inning as they went ahead 5-1.
That lead did not last long as Rhodes exploded for five runs in the second. Sophomore
Brady John led off with an infield single. After two straight outs, Munson ripped a triple into right, scoring John and cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Notestine followed with a RBI double off the right center wall followed by a walk to Olive. Junior
Levi Greenberg single home a run to bring the Lynx within one while Bosma ripped a two RBIÂ triple to give Rhodes a 6-5 lead.Â
Junior
Jack Mercer came in relief and began to cool off the Fontbonne bats, working 3.2 innings and dominating batters in the process as he struck out four batters.
Rhodes broke the game open in the fourth as Munson walked with one out, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Notestine singled home Munson on a RBI while Olive put Rhodes ahead 9-5 with a two run bomb over left.
From there, the duo of freshmen
Trey Sledge,
Matt Dale, Jake Medich, and senior
Jackson Lourie combined to pitch four shutout innings, allowing no hits and combining for six strikeouts.
Munson put the game away for good with a two RBI double as Rhodes as in complete control with an 11-5 lead.
Munson finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs, three runs scored, and two stolen bases while Olive was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Notestine went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base, and two runs scored while Bosma was 2-for-4 with a triple, a RBI, and a run scored.Â
Mercer earned his first win of the 2016. Both Dale and Lourie each had two strikeouts as Rhodes combined for a total of 10 strikeouts.
The Lynx move to 4-3 on the season and will prepare to host the Rhodes College Classic with nine games in three days at both Stauffer Field and USA Stadium in Millington. The Lynx will take on Webster Friday at 2 PM.
