MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team out scored the DePauw Tigers 10-2 in the second half as they cruised to a 15-6 win on Saturday afternoon at Crain Field to move to 2-0 on the young season.
The Lynx put together a strong effort, out shooting the Tigers 44-28 including 31 shots on target. Rhodes forced 17 DePauw turnovers and held a 31-25 advantage in ground balls. The Lynx also went 15 of 22 in face offs.
It was a back-and-forth first half as the teams exchanged goals throughout the first half, Sophomore
Tyler Milwit put Rhodes ahead 1-0 as both teams only pushed one goal across in the first.
In the second quarter, sophomore
John Tooher made it a 2-1 game while senior
Jason Lee pushed it ahead to a 3-2 lead midway through the second. DePauw scored the next two goals to move ahead 4-3, but Rhodes scored the final two with 1:20 remaining in the half as freshman
Ethan Garland and sophomore
Matthew Simon made it a 5-4 game at the break.
The momentum carried over into the second half as junior
Ryan Fennelly opened the scoring for a 6-4 lead. After a Tiger goal, Rhodes scored the next six goals, moving into the fourth quarter, as they blew the game wide open.
Fennelly assisted on the next three goals to freshman
James Margraff as well as a pair to Lee while junior
Steven Yowan, Garland, and Fennelly all scored to make it a 12-5 lead.
DePauw got a goal midway through the fourth, but Rhodes closed their amazing half with goals from Fennelly, Milwit, and freshman
David Jones closed the game out to give Rhodes the 15-6 victory.
Fennelly finished with three goals and three assists while Lee also had a had trick. Milwit and Garland each added a pair of goals while Tooher had a goal and two assists. Senior Matt Jones, junior
Tommy Reingruber, and freshman
David Perez all had an assist each.
Senior
John Wancowicz had a huge game defensively, finishing with five caused turnovers and five ground balls while Margraff had five ground balls as well. Garland and junior
Mike Knudsen each had two ground balls while junior
John Snyder had two caused turnovers. Sophomore
Cameron Link had nine saves to pick up his second win of the season.
Rhodes moves to 2-0 on the year and will look to ride the wave of momentum into tomorrow afternoon as they welcome in Carthage for a 12 PM contest at Crain Field.
