Lynx Men Claim Outright Title; Close Regular Season with Win at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - Before the game between the Rhodes College men's basketball team and Hendrix even tipped off, the Lynx found out Sewanee defeated Centre for the Lynx to claim the outright regular season title.

Rhodes already had clinched the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament as well as hosting rights, but not having to share the title was icing on the cake.

Despite all these commodities, the Lynx still got it done on Saturday night, holding off a Hendrix rally for a 101-98 win.

Rhodes struggled slightly from the field, shooting only 47% and 34% from deep. The Lynx also struggled at the free throw line, going 22 of 36 to keep Hendrix in the contest. Despite being out rebounded 51-31, Rhodes did force 32 Hendrix turnovers.

The Lynx got hot early on and took an 11 point lead in the first five minutes, scoring 19 points behind hot shooting from junior Price Dalton and sophomore Daniel Darst.

Hendrix pushed the lead down to five and battled back-and-forth with the Lynx before taking a 40-39 lead with less than five to play in the half. A 9-1 Rhodes run put them back up by seven. Junior Anesu Nyawata heated up in the final minutes to give Rhodes a 59-48 lead at the break. Darst had 14 in the first half while Nyawata poured in 14.

The game slowed in the second half as a combined 34 fouls were called. The Lynx led by as many as 15 and maintained a double digit lead throughout most of the second half.

However, Hendrix rallied, moving within 10 with five minutes to play and getting the game down to two with 2:05 to play in the contest. Rhodes responded with tough defense, holding the Warriors to three points in the final two minutes and getting it done at the charity stripe to escape with a 101-98 win.

Darst scored 17 to go with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Nyawata poured in 16. Harrison added 11 points while senior Tyler Gee and freshmen Mitch Weatherford and Nick De Feria all scored nine. Nyawata and Gee each had three assists while senior J.J Weir had six assists and freshman Preston Giroux had four steals.

Rhodes finishes the season at 14-10 overall and 11-3 in the SAA. They will host the SAA Championship this upcoming weekend in Mallory Gymnasium. The tournament begins at Friday at 1 PM as the top-seeded Lynx take on Millsaps in the first contest.
