JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon behind strong pitching all day long, defeating Dallas 2-0 and Piedmont 8-4, on Friday at Twenty Field on the campus of Millsaps College.
The Lynx started the day with a 2-0 win over the Crusaders, pounding out eight hits while holding Dallas to no hits on the afternoon. Rhodes also took advantage of four Crusader errors.
Freshmen
Jacob Dubs and
Trey Sledge combired for 12 strikeouts in the game. Dubs pitched six complete innings to move to 2-0, striking out eight to four walks while only allowing two hits. Sledge picked up the save, pitching three complete and striking out four while only allowing two hits.
Rhodes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as senior
Bennett Notestine singled home senior
Bill Munson for the early lead. Notestine would be the one who scores in the fifth inning as junior
Levi Greenberg singled him home for a 2-0 lead.
It was all part of a three hit game for Notestine, going 3-for-4 including three stolen bases and a RBI and run scored. Greenberg had two hits with a RBI on the day while sophomores
Nick Bosma,
Jacob Telli, and
Brady John all had one hit.
Against Piedmont, after allowing four runs in four innings, Rhodes completely shut down the Lions as the combination of junior
Nick Ferngren and senior
Jackson Lourie combined for 12 strikeouts in five innings while only allowing one hit for the 8-4 win.
Senior
Blake Glauben started the game, pitching four complete and striking out five, but walking seven. Glauben only allowed four hits in his outing.
Ferngren went four complete and struck out 10, allowing no runs on one hit and only walking two. Lourie finished the game for his first save of the season, striking out two in the final inning of play.
Rhodes opened the game in the first with a 2-0 lead behind a RBI single from freshman Jake Medich followed by Notestine scoring on a passed ball. Piedmont scored three in the second to move ahead 3-2 before two more runs in the third by Rhodes made it 4-3 as Greenberg scored on a wild pitch and sophomore
Jake Stacy singled home a run.
After tying the game at four in the fourth, Rhodes took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as Medich singled home his second RBI of the day. Rhodes scored one run in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings as sophomore
Chris Winter and Munson each had RBIs while Notestine scored by stealing home.
Timely plays along with dominant pitching was all Rhodes needed as they finished the game with an 8-4 victory.
Medich finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk while Munson was 1-for-4 with two walks, a RBI, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Senior
Ryan Olive scored twice while Stacy and Winter were each 1-for-2 with a RBI. Notestine added two more stolen bases while Greenberg had a stolen base.
Rhodes is 3-2 on the season and return to action on Saturday as they take on LaGrange for the second time this season at 12 PM in Jackson. The two teams place on February 10th in Montgomery with the Panthers picking up a 7-6 win.
