Lynx Women Suffer Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Sewanee

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Sunday afternoon as the hands of rival Sewanee, falling 95-91 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.

The Lynx shot 35 of 78 from the field (45%), connected on 35% from behind the arc, and out rebounded the Tigers 57-42, but 16 turnovers to Sewanee's seven, along with 13 made 3-pointers from the Sewanee proved to be the difference maker.

Sewanne jumped out to an 8-0 lead early on and pushed the lead out to 13-4, but Rhodes began to take control in the paint as the duo of sophomore Allie Young and freshman Anna Muller pulled Rhodes back into it.

Muller scored eight points in the first quarter and got Rhodes within one late in the first. After a mini Sewanee run, buckets by Young and junior Jessie Ustick made it a 23-21 game at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Sewanee pushed the lead back out to as many as six, but Rhodes responded back with great play in the paint. Back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Sara Giesen tied the game at 32 with 2:22 to play in the half.

Sewanee pushed it back up to four, but a layup from senior Bailey Kramer followed by a 3-pointer from senior Blaire Smith made it 39-38, but free throws before the buzzer gave the Tigers a 40-39 lead at half.

In the third quarter, Rhodes looked as though they were taking control as a pair of Erin Deery 3-pointer combined with baskets from Kramer and Ustick pushed Rhodes ahead 51-45. Rhodes closed the quarter with five straight points to take a 56-48 lead going into the final quarter.

It looked as though Rhodes was in control, leading by seven with five minutes to play, but a 12-2 run by Sewanee pushed the Tigers ahead 68-65 with one minute to play. The Lynx got a free throw from Kramer a layup from Smith with 11 seconds to play to force overtime.

In the first overtime, Rhodes led majority of the extra period, leading by as many as six, but a Bella Taylor 3-pointer with three seconds to play tied it at 77 and forced a second overtime where Sewanee was able to take control and pull away for the four point win.

Young had a monster game with 17 points and 15 rebounds while Smith added 17 points and seven assists. Deery scored 14 while Ustick and Kramer each scored 11 with Kramer pulling down 15 boards.
