MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Thanks in part to a four runs sixth inning the Rhodes College baseball team earned their first win of the 2017 season, defeating the Huntingdon College Hawks on the road by the score of 5-1.
For the Lynx, they put together five runs on seven hits with no errors while holding Huntingdon to one run on six hits as they committed one error in the contest.
It was a scoreless game through five complete as freshman
Jacob Dubs put together a terrific outing, the first of his college career. Dubs went five complete, allowing five hits, but striking out three as he earned his first career win.
The sixth proved to be the big inning for the Lynx as freshman
Paul Giacomazzi walked with one and stole second. After senior
Bill Munson put down a sac bunt to move Giacomazzi into scoring position, senior
Bennett Notestine put down a perfect bunt for a RBI single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a balk to make it a 2-0 lead for Rhodes.
The inning appeared to be over when freshman
John Medich struck out, but he reached base on a wild third strike and a hit by pitch and walk loaded them up for sophomore
Brady John, who came through with a two RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Lynx got one more run in the eighth inning as senior
Ryan Olive put down the squeeze play, scoring Medich and earning a RBI single to put Rhodes in complete control. Huntingdon got one back in the ninth, but it was not enough as the Lynx walked away with the win.
Freshman
Alex Garrett and sophomore
Nick Ferngren combined for three innings of scoreless, hitless ball, while senior
Jackson Lourie only allowed one hit in the ninth to close the game.
Medich led the Lynx offensively, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored while sophomore
Jacob Telli drew a pair of walks. John had a pair of RBIs while Olive and Notestine drove in the other runs.
Rhodes moves to 1-2 on the young season and will return to action next weekend in Jackson, Miss. with a doubleheader on Friday against Dallas at 12 PM and Piedmont at 6 PM.
