Rhodes routs Ferrum to stay unbeaten in conference

Memphis - In the only home game on campus near and over the weekend, Rhodes College field hockey's second-half surge ensured an 8-2 victory over Ferrum College Thursday evening.

As the sun began to set, Ferrum maintained possession for the first several minutes as Rhodes was called for multiple fouls. The Lynx scored first just under two minutes into the game when Lizzie Wood found Hailey Mules wide open. Mules received the ball all alone near the top of the circle and as Ferrum's goalie came out, the sophomore put away the ball to the left corner. Ferrum scored on almost the exact same play to tie the game 10 minutes later.

The Lynx took a short 2-1 lead after a corner opportunity in the 19th minute. Julia Schiciano sent the ball to Meghan Harmon whose pass to Jillian Christensen was returned. Harmon then slipped the ball back to Christensen who then slammed the ball to the back of the boards. Ferrum's Magdaleno, who assisted the Panthers' first goal scored their second goal after time had already expired in the first half. Ferrum earned a corner as time was expiring and she tipped in Alicia Jones' shot from the top of the circle.

After a little chat at halftime, the Lynx flew out and scored four goals within four minutes on their way to a six-goal second half. SAA Offensive Player of the Week, Mackenzie Busby, tallied a hat trick and as during those 35 minutes of play. Mules scored again while Wood also netted a golden nugget and Schicano an assist. Busby now has 11 goals and the season and 27 points with Mules on her heals with 10 goals.

Rhodes, who is now 8-4 on the season and 4-0 in conference recorded 40 shots to Ferrum's eight and earned 16 penalty corners. The Panthers tallied six corners and 17 total saves, 12 by starter Courtney Gosslin.

For Rhodes, Laura Eckelkamp and Nina Migneco split time in cage, with Migneco earning the win. She came into a tied game and saved three shots in the second half.

The Lynx will not play a game this weekend, but will travel to Hendrix Tuesday followed by a trip to Sewanee on Sunday, Oct. 22 for their final conference game of the season. Rhodes will conclude regular season play at home on Saturday, Oct. 28th in a non-conference matchup against Hendrix.
